Watch The Trailer:

Why It Makes My List

It is exceedingly rare that a series will resonate with fans of multiple genres. David Lynch is a master of achieving this with his movies, and he also does it with Twin Peaks, his first stab at television. Two series are available on Netflix, with a third season in 2017 taking place around 25 years later.

Twin Peaks was my first foray into television noir. Lynch leads us through the sordid universes he creates, manipulating our expectations along the way. It’s a dense viewing experience, but worth it!

Other Reasons To Watch

Who Killed Laura Palmer? That is the question that will be buzzing in your head throughout Twin Peaks' odyssey into the weird, terrible and wonderful in the deep forests of Washington state. The mystery was so engrossing, that an executive at the Twin Peaks production company received a call from their financier Carl Linder, wanting an answer. Mr Linder was not asking for himself, but for President of the United States George H W Bush, who was in turn asking for Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union.

The effortless and beautifully strange combination of cinematic and television genres in Twin Peaks is captivating. It is first and foremost a mystery tinged with the noir aesthetic, but it also dives into areas of the supernatural, elements of melodrama, and even some slapstick. I enjoyed every moment of the journey.

As with anything involving David Lynch, there is a 'woman in trouble' theme to Twin Peaks. The show was made after Lynch failed to secure the rights to a screen adaptation of Marilyn Monroe’s biography Goddess, and perhaps it is no coincidence that both Monroe and Laura Palmer reveal in their diaries that they were having an affair with an important man before their deaths. The Audrey Horne character (Sherilyn Fenn) laid the seeds for Naomi Watts’ character in Mulholland Dr. (2001), again about a woman in trouble. Sheryl Lee’s dual characters of Laura Palmer and her cousin Maddy Ferguson can also be seen as a direct reference to Kim Novak’s dual characters in Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958), a film that Lynch has acknowledged as an influence.

Not everyone appreciates the obscure humor in Twin Peaks, and at times the odd characters can be a little grating...even we're often rooting for them later!

Don't Watch If...

You’re looking for easily accessible light entertainment.

  • Well, having missed Twin Peaks the first time around, I decided to start watching it from the beginning. I’m sad to say that I’ve abandoned it halfway through episode 6 of the first season. I like David Lynch movies, but his style just doesn’t work for me in the TV series format. None of the characters are quite realistic enough for me to care about, and while I’m prepared to ‘go with’ a convoluted plot with multiple loose ends for a couple of hours, I don’t like finding myself with only a loose grip on what’s going on and where it’s all heading after five or six! I kind of liked some of the humour, but not quite enough to carry me through. It probably doesn’t help that Twin Peaks is said by many to have lost its way in the second season when David Lynch left. I’m certainly not hanging around for that!

Twin Peaks has always had its fans, and I hear that the new series is being well-received, but it’s not for me. We can’t watch everything, so I’m happy to pass on this one!
