In a nutshell... Hosts Joel and Mike and their robot companions offer hilarious running commentary on B movies they're forced to watch in these classic MST3K episodes.

Watch The Trailer:

Why It Makes My List

In 2016 Netflix announced that it would be distributing a brand new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K). New episodes will be out in April 2017, but in the meantime you can whet your appetite with 20 classics. As a big consumer of television, movies, and as someone who loves to laugh, MST3K is the best of all worlds for me. And if like me you’re a fan of science fiction, horror, and fantasy, you’ll be happy that many of the best episodes are of those genres. There were two hosts: Joel Hodgson (the show’s creator), and later Mike Nelson. Personally, I prefer Mike’s energy to Joel’s dry (and sometimes sleepy) humor…but the real stars are makeshift riffing robots: Tom Servo; Crow and Gypsy.

Other Reasons To Watch

You'll be exposed to movies you never thought could have existed! Look at some of these titles: Hercules Against the Moon Men (1964), Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders (1996), Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964), and Teenagers from Outer Space (1959). Never judge a book by its cover, as they saying goes…but in the case of these movies, your first impressions probably hit the mark.

The depth and breadth of the comedy is really something. Sure, some of the jokes can be dated. Newt Gingrich, anyone? Then again, some have taken on new relevance. Donald Trump, anyone? References abound to movies, songs, politics and even mid-Western-isms (the show was produced in Minnesota.) I also love how the performers can find the perfect phrase to put into the mouths of the characters on screen.

The episodes on Netflix include some of the best. Time Chasers (1994) is about a man who turns a two-seater airplane into a time machine and sells it to an evil corporation. Space Mutiny (1988) was an attempt to cash in on the success of Star Wars (1977). It includes a character who dies in one scene and then turns up very much alive in the next. Pod People (1983) rips off E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)involving a boy and the elephantine space alien he calls Trumpy.

The host segments can be hit or miss and bog down the pace. The show always opens with Mike or Joel and the bots doing a sketch in the satellite's control room. Though some are enjoyable, others overstay their welcome. We're here to see some movie riffing, after all. The feature is interrupted with interstitial segments as well, which also aren't as funny as the jokes during the movie.

Don't Watch If...

You’re not a fan of abrasive humor. The premise for the show certainly indicates that the comedy is gonna be rough and tumble, but some of the jokes can be cutting, like poking fun at an actor’s physical appearance.
